Ask an assistant which washing powder is gentler on sensitive skin, or which cereal fits a child's lunchbox, and it now settles the question before anyone reaches a shelf. It reads what the makers have published, weighs it, and names a few. The revealing figure in consumer goods sits beneath the name at the top. Of the 124 sites a machine could read when we scanned the field on 1 September 2026, only 1 cleared the Strong band of 70 out of 100, and the median score across the readable field was 46. Most of the aisle sits below the line where an engine answers cleanly and without hedging.

When no maker reads as the clear authority on its own products, the machine has to improvise. It assembles its comparison from whatever it can piece together, a retailer's listing, a review site, an old press line, rather than from the brand's own account of itself. The best-read site in the category is Levi Strauss & Co. at 71. It has crossed into the Strong band, and the rest of the aisle has not yet followed it there.

On 1 September 2026 we ran the leading consumer goods organisations through the Crane Index^™, our three-scanner AI Visibility Suite. Of the 188 home pages we approached, 64 could not be read by a machine at all: 36 refused an automated reader, 19 gave it no response and 9 serve pages that do not exist until scripts run. Of the 124 a machine could read, 1 cleared 70 out of 100, and the field is led by Levi Strauss & Co. at 71, with Colgate-Palmolive next at 69. The sixty-second read

▸The finding: 124 of the 188 sites we approached could be read by a machine, and 1 of them cleared 70 out of 100 on the Crane Index.
▸The money: when a buyer asks an engine to shortlist suppliers, an illegible site is simply not on the list. The demand does not vanish, it goes to a legible competitor free, while your paid channels buy it back at a rising cost per acquisition.
▸The pattern to watch: in the two flagship studies, the FTSE 100 and the UK's biggest online retailers, one mechanical habit separated the top of the field from the bottom, valid structured data and one identity a machine can resolve. That is a markup sprint, not a rebuild, so a median can move faster than a board expects.

Across the 124 readable sites the Crane Index ran from 21 to 71. 1 scored 70 or above, 36 sat between 55 and 69, 44 between 40 and 54, and 43 below 40. The strongest of the three reads was Agent Readiness at a median of 65, and the weakest was Brand Representation at 17, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are.

These names have no score for a sharper reason: their sites would not let a machine reader in at all. They refused it outright, gave it nothing, or serve pages that are empty until scripts run, and the crawlers and shopping agents AI engines send live in the same data centres our reader does. One fair caveat, stated plainly: a site that verifies crawlers by network may admit engines it recognises while refusing ours, so they are reported as unmeasured, never scored. But a door bolted against unknown machines is a posture, and it is one the machines now bringing buyers will meet first.

What a faint field does to a shortlist

When a shopper compares two moisturisers or two snack brands, the assistant does not rank them the way a search page once did. It composes a short recommendation and points to somewhere to buy. With the readable field running from 21 to 71 and a median Crane Index of 46, most makers give it a thin and uncertain read to work from. 87 of the sites it could open scored below 55, the zone where a brand is present on the web but barely resolvable as a set of facts. That is the difference between being described accurately and being paraphrased by a third party who never had to answer to you.

The stakes are sharper for consumer goods than for most fields, because the maker rarely holds the transaction. The retailer does. The one thing a brand fully controls is the story it tells about its ingredients, its claims and its provenance. When that story reads faintly to a machine, a household name that spent decades earning trust in a claim watches an engine restate it second-hand, and a small drift there becomes a false claim attached to a trusted label. A field this quiet to read is one where the loudest voice in each answer belongs to whoever the engine happened to find legible, rather than to the brand that owns the promise.

Why the makers of the nation's shelves read faintly

The pattern behind the scores is mechanical rather than a matter of brand strength. Consumer goods sites are built for the eye. A product range loads through a script, so a fetcher arriving at the page finds a shell with no products inside it, which is why 9 of the sites we approached served pages that did not exist until scripts ran, and 64 in all could not be read at all. Where the page does render, there is usually no structured product data, so ingredients, sizes, allergen information and claims sit as prose a machine must guess at rather than facts it can trust. This is the ground the Crane Index calls technical SEO for the machine reader, and it is where the whole category is thin: the weakest of the three reads was Brand Representation at a median of 17, against Agent Readiness at 65.

A house of many labels compounds it. When a group owns a dozen brands with no single resolvable identity, the machine cannot tell which brand owns which promise, so it hedges or omits. And the commercial answer a shopper actually wants, where to buy, is often missing entirely because the retailer holds it. Each gap is a small one on its own. Together they are the reason a category of trusted names reads to an engine as a blur.

The shortest route to the front of the answer

The encouraging part of a field that reads this faintly is how little separates the middle of it from the top. The remedy is rarely a rebuild. It is valid Organization and Product structured data on every range and product page, so ingredients, sizes, claims and stockists become data a machine can lift rather than pixels it must interpret. It is one resolvable identity per brand, rendered the same wherever it appears, so a house of labels stops confusing the fetcher. And it is putting the answer to where to buy somewhere a reader can reach it.
