Ask an assistant where to book Sunday lunch for six, which gym near the office runs a class after work, or a hotel with a room free this weekend, and it answers in a sentence, naming two or three places outright. This benchmark measures which hospitality and leisure sites a machine can read cleanly enough to earn a place in that sentence. In the run measured on 1 September 2026, 60 of the 182 leading UK hospitality and leisure sites could not be read by a machine at all, and the median Crane Index score across the rest was 42 out of 100.

An engine builds its recommendation only from what it could actually read. A venue whose menu is a photograph, whose opening hours load through a script, and whose availability sits locked inside a booking widget the reader cannot enter is a venue the machine cannot describe, so it recommends one it can. The guest never sees the difference. The sentence simply names somewhere else.

On 1 September 2026 we ran the leading hospitality and leisure organisations through the Crane Index^™, our three-scanner AI Visibility Suite. Of the 182 home pages we approached, 60 could not be read by a machine at all: 36 refused an automated reader, 18 gave it no response and 6 serve pages that do not exist until scripts run. Of the 122 a machine could read, 6 cleared 70 out of 100, and the field is led by Orangetheory Fitness at 79, with Five Guys next at 77. The sixty-second read

▸The finding: 122 of the 182 sites we approached could be read by a machine, and 6 of them cleared 70 out of 100 on the Crane Index.
▸The money: when a buyer asks an engine to shortlist suppliers, an illegible site is simply not on the list. The demand does not vanish, it goes to a legible competitor free, while your paid channels buy it back at a rising cost per acquisition.
▸The pattern to watch: in the two flagship studies, the FTSE 100 and the UK's biggest online retailers, one mechanical habit separated the top of the field from the bottom, valid structured data and one identity a machine can resolve. That is a markup sprint, not a rebuild, so a median can move faster than a board expects.

Across the 122 readable sites the Crane Index ran from 21 to 79. 6 scored 70 or above, 25 sat between 55 and 69, 44 between 40 and 54, and 47 below 40. The strongest of the three reads was Agent Readiness at a median of 63, and the weakest was Brand Representation at 15, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are.

These names have no score for a sharper reason: their sites would not let a machine reader in at all. They refused it outright, gave it nothing, or serve pages that are empty until scripts run, and the crawlers and shopping agents AI engines send live in the same data centres our reader does. One fair caveat, stated plainly: a site that verifies crawlers by network may admit engines it recognises while refusing ours, so they are reported as unmeasured, never scored. But a door bolted against unknown machines is a posture, and it is one the machines now bringing buyers will meet first.

The scores run wide and the centre of the field sits low

Of the 122 sites a reader could open, the Crane Index ran from 21 to 79. 6 cleared the Strong band of 70, while 91 sat below 55, in the bands where a machine's read of a venue is partial at best. The three reads split the same way: the sector is strongest on Agent Readiness at a median of 63 and weakest on Brand Representation at 15. The blocked group carries the sharpest warning: 6 of the sites a reader could not enter serve pages that do not exist until scripts run, so a machine meets an empty frame where the menu, the hours and the room rate should sit. None of this reflects the welcome these places give in person. It measures one thing: how legible the site is to the software now standing between the guest and the door.

A guessed opening time costs a venue more than silence

An engine that cannot confirm a venue's details will sometimes fill the gap, and a guessed price or an invented closing time is worse than no mention at all, because the guest acts on it. A family shown the wrong Sunday hours drives across town to a locked door and blames the venue, never the engine. Meanwhile the booking aggregators and review platforms are already fully legible to a machine, so the assistant leans on them and routes the table, the room night or the class booking to whichever operator it could read directly. With 91 of the readable field below 55, much of the sector is losing that first mention quietly, to a rival the guest was shown and trusted because the machine appeared to have checked.

What puts a venue back on the shortlist

The repair is rarely a rebuild, and the strongest sites in this run show the standard to aim at: Orangetheory Fitness led the field for AI readability at 79 well clear of the median of 42. Three moves lift a hospitality site fastest. Put valid LocalBusiness and Organization structured data, the machine-readable labelling engines rely on, on every venue page. Publish the opening hours, prices and menu as real text a fetcher can reach, beside the photograph rather than inside it, and bring the booking and availability signals within a reader's reach instead of sealing them behind a third-party frame. And where a group runs several venues, state one consistent identity across the estate, worded the same way everywhere, so a machine trusts it is the same operator throughout. This is technical work measured in days, which is why a hospitality median can move faster than a board expects once the AI search signals are in place.
