Of the fields the Crane Index™ measures, technology and software is the one where the machines can already read the leaders. That matters, because it settles an argument the rest of the sector likes to have. When we scan a category and every site struggles, illegibility can pass for an industry-wide limit. Technology and software offers no such cover.

The run on 1 September 2026 put 123 of the 169 companies we approached through all three engines. Dynatrace came out in front on a composite score of 88, and 17 companies cleared the Strong band of 70. The median composite score is 57, higher than most sectors we benchmark reach. The engines read this field strongest on Agent Readiness, at 65. So the top of this table stands as a working demonstration that a software company can be read cleanly by an AI engine, using the same technologies everyone else here builds on.

On 1 September 2026 we ran the leading technology and software organisations through the Crane Index^™, our three-scanner AI Visibility Suite. Of the 169 home pages we approached, 46 could not be read by a machine at all: 30 refused an automated reader, 11 gave it no response and 5 serve pages that do not exist until scripts run. Of the 123 a machine could read, 17 cleared 70 out of 100, and the field is led by Dynatrace at 88, with HubSpot next at 80. Every figure here is a first-party measurement, the full dated result set is archived, and we re-run the scan and report the movement.

The sixty-second read

▸The finding: 123 of the 169 sites we approached could be read by a machine, and 17 of them cleared 70 out of 100 on the Crane Index.
▸The money: when a buyer asks an engine to shortlist suppliers, an illegible site is simply not on the list. The demand does not vanish, it goes to a legible competitor free, while your paid channels buy it back at a rising cost per acquisition.
▸The pattern to watch: in the two flagship studies, the FTSE 100 and the UK's biggest online retailers, one mechanical habit separated the top of the field from the bottom, valid structured data and one identity a machine can resolve. That is a markup sprint, not a rebuild, so a median can move faster than a board expects.

Across the 123 readable sites the Crane Index ran from 21 to 88. 17 scored 70 or above, 51 sat between 55 and 69, 30 between 40 and 54, and 25 below 40. The strongest of the three reads was Agent Readiness at a median of 65, and the weakest was Brand Representation at 33, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are.

These names have no score for a sharper reason: their sites would not let a machine reader in at all. They refused it outright, gave it nothing, or serve pages that are empty until scripts run, and the crawlers and shopping agents AI engines send live in the same data centres our reader does. One fair caveat, stated plainly: a site that verifies crawlers by network may admit engines it recognises while refusing ours, so they are reported as unmeasured, never scored. But a door bolted against unknown machines is a posture, and it is one the machines now bringing buyers will meet first.

The readable top and the silent tail

The strong headline hides a split. Above the median sit companies an engine can describe without guessing, and below it sits a long tail it cannot. 55 sites scored under 55 on the Crane Index, and 46 of the ones we approached could not be scored at all. The engines simply could not get a clean read of what those companies do.

The reasons are worth naming, because they are not exotic. Of the blocked sites, 5 served a page that only assembles inside a live browser, so a fetcher that does not run JavaScript arrived at a near-empty shell where the product description should be. 30 turned the engines away outright, and 11 returned nothing an engine could use. Each of those is an engineering decision, taken for reasons that once made sense, and each one now hides the plain facts a machine needs before it will put a product forward. The field reads weakest on Brand Representation, at 33, which is where the tail loses most of its ground.

Why the gap is now indefensible

In a struggling category, a low score is a shared condition. In this one, it is a position you hold while a competitor down the road holds a better one, on the same stack, for the same buyer. A software purchase can now start inside an AI assistant before anyone speaks to sales. A buyer describes a problem, asks which tools solve it, what they integrate with and who they are built for, and the engine answers from what it can read on the vendors' own sites. A company it can parse cleanly lands in that first shortlist. One it cannot parse is absent, and the buyer never learns there was a substitution.

Worse than absence is a confident misread. When a machine cannot read your product but tries anyway, it fills the gap from stale fragments, naming integrations you dropped years ago or a use case you have long since left behind. That version of you is then repeated to every buyer who asks. The leaders in this field give an engine nothing to fill in: what they build, integrate with and serve is stated plainly on pages a machine can read, so an engine that describes them works from their own words. That legibility is the whole measured distance between 88 at the top of this table and 21 at the bottom.

Closing the distance without a rebuild

None of the fixes here touch the product your customers use, which is the point most engineering teams miss. The work sits on the marketing site and the public documentation, not the app.

Server-side render or pre-render the pages that describe what your software does, so an engine reads the same sentences a human does rather than an empty frame. Add valid Organization and Product structured data, the machine-readable labelling engines rely on, and resolve a scatter of sub-brands and acquired names to one entity a machine can hold onto. Lift the core of your documentation clear of the login, so an engine can confirm what the tool actually does instead of inferring it. This is technical SEO applied to a modern software stack, and it is far smaller than the rebuild teams fear.
