This benchmark measures how cleanly AI engines read a car maker, dealer or supplier's own website, and whether they describe its models, stock and capabilities correctly. In the run measured on 1 September 2026, 108 of 179 automotive sites returned enough for a machine to score at all.

Ask an assistant which small electric SUV suits a family, or who has a particular model in stock nearby, and the answer is built from the sites it can read. A fleet manager comparing running costs and a procurement lead vetting a parts supplier do the same. A car firm a machine cannot parse never enters that answer.

On 1 September 2026 we ran the leading automotive organisations through the Crane Index^™, our three-scanner AI Visibility Suite. Of the 179 home pages we approached, 71 could not be read by a machine at all: 39 refused an automated reader, 29 gave it no response and 3 serve pages that do not exist until scripts run. Of the 108 a machine could read, 7 cleared 70 out of 100, and the field is led by Vertu Motors at 77, with Perodua next at 76. Every figure here is a first-party measurement, the full dated result set is archived, and we re-run the scan and report the movement.

The sixty-second read

▸The finding: 108 of the 179 sites we approached could be read by a machine, and 7 of them cleared 70 out of 100 on the Crane Index.
▸The money: when a buyer asks an engine to shortlist suppliers, an illegible site is simply not on the list. The demand does not vanish, it goes to a legible competitor free, while your paid channels buy it back at a rising cost per acquisition.
▸The pattern to watch: in the two flagship studies, the FTSE 100 and the UK's biggest online retailers, one mechanical habit separated the top of the field from the bottom, valid structured data and one identity a machine can resolve. That is a markup sprint, not a rebuild, so a median can move faster than a board expects.

Across the 108 readable sites the Crane Index ran from 20 to 77. 7 scored 70 or above, 23 sat between 55 and 69, 26 between 40 and 54, and 52 below 40. The strongest of the three reads was Agent Readiness at a median of 62, and the weakest was Brand Representation at 13, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are.

These names have no score for a sharper reason: their sites would not let a machine reader in at all. They refused it outright, gave it nothing, or serve pages that are empty until scripts run, and the crawlers and shopping agents AI engines send live in the same data centres our reader does. One fair caveat, stated plainly: a site that verifies crawlers by network may admit engines it recognises while refusing ours, so they are reported as unmeasured, never scored. But a door bolted against unknown machines is a posture, and it is one the machines now bringing buyers will meet first.

The field a machine can reach but cannot name

The most telling figure in this run is the gap sitting inside it. Automotive sites score a median of 62 on Agent Readiness, whether an automated agent can reach and act on the site, yet only 13 on Brand Representation, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are. In plain terms, an automated reader can usually get onto a car firm's pages and move around them, but it struggles to confirm who the firm is, which marques it sells and how the parts fit together. A machine that reaches your stock without being sure whose stock it is will hesitate before naming you.

A long tail of forecourts an assistant never reaches

The centre of the field sits low. The median Crane Index score across the automotive sites measured was 40, among the weaker fields we track, and 52 sites scored under 40, a heavy weak tail rather than a handful of stragglers. Counting every site below 55, 78 sat there. Beyond the scored group, another 71 sites could not be read cleanly at all: 39 refused the automated request outright and 29 returned nothing an engine could use. A refused or empty page is the plainest form of AI search invisibility. The assistant moves to the next dealer without pausing, and the enquiry goes with it.

One operator, many franchises, no identity to settle

The weakness in brand representation has a very automotive cause. A large dealer group runs many franchise marques under one operator, often across dozens of separate sites, with no single consistent statement of who owns what and which showroom sells which brand. A person navigates this by instinct. A machine cannot. When the same group describes itself one way on this page and another way on that one, an engine cannot settle on a single identity to attach a model or a location to, so it attaches the enquiry to a rival whose site says plainly who it is. This says nothing about the cars or the service, only about how readable the structure is to software.

What puts a car firm back in the answer

The remedy is rarely a rebuild. The strongest sites in this run show what a clean read looks like. Vertu Motors led the field at 77 well clear of the median of 40, though 7 sites cleared the Strong band of 70, so the room to lead this field is wide open.

Three moves lift an automotive site fastest. Put valid structured data, the machine-readable labelling engines rely on, on the pages carrying your models, specifications and stock, so a reader takes the range, the trim and the price without having to run a configurator or a dealer-locator tool. State one consistent identity for the group and for each franchise, worded the same way everywhere, so a machine can settle who you are. And make sure the automated request is answered rather than turned away, since a page an engine cannot open scores nothing at all.
